Cocoon

Cocoon [Kuh-Koon]

As a kid Flannery was never the top reader in her class; in fact she couldn’t stand reading. Telling lies to peers in order to make it through the tests, this became an ongoing issue to her studies. Praying the teacher would not call on her to read in front of the class, books became a sort of nightmare. This piece represents Flannery covering up her struggle and hiding it because she was ashamed. Through the constant wrapping and enclosing the books, she forms a cocoon of protection from her childhood nightmare.

Deterioration

Deterioration

Through dip dyeing and transforming books structurally, Flannery emphasizes on the deterioration of books in today’s society. Soaked in a bath of indigo and wrapped with all natural fibers she wants to find the beauty in these precious and used items that once had a life of their own. Technology has taken great control in school programs, leaving books apart of the past.  Flannery intends to bring awareness in this subject with hopes to leave an impact on the viewer to never forget this common item that’s left behind.

Growth

Growth

In Flannery Burt’s ongoing experimentation of sculpting out of books she begins to make forms inspired by growth in mystic creatures. Inspired by tubeworms found in the deep sea this piece is her manipulation of these otherworldly beings that have beauty in their shape in form. Playing with perception and the way a book changes she manipulates the structure in a repetitive way. Binding the books to form a unit and displaying them in a new perception this piece has beauty similar the mystic unknown shape and form of tubeworms.

Propeller

Propeller

This piece represents a tragedy that struck Georgia which affected me in a way of deep sorrow. A small plane filled with a father, two sons and one of the son’s fiancé crashed on highway I-75. This tragedy hit home knowing my father flies on a small plane almost daily. After hearing about the crash I found out that the two boys were dear friends to my roommates. While wrapping the books in blue cotton yarn I think back on this incident and feel for the family and their losses. I wanted to make this sculptural piece as remembrance for those who passed and a reminder of how fragile life is.
